BMP is the original Windows bitmap: essentially uncompressed pixel data, which keeps quality perfect and file size enormous. PNG is lossless: the pixels you save are the pixels you get back, and it supports a real transparency channel, which makes it the format of choice for screenshots and line art.

Why convert BMP to PNG
Anything you plan to keep editing belongs in PNG: every save leaves the pixels untouched. Screenshots, UI mockups, images with text and logos all fall into that category — and they usually need transparency too.
When PNG is the right choice
Screenshots, logos, transparent assets, and anything you plan to edit again. Reach for something else when: larger than jpg or webp; not ideal for large photos on a website.
What changes after conversion
Changes to expect: the output supports an alpha channel; the extension becomes .png; camera metadata is stripped; the file may get larger — that is the nature of the format.
Practical tips
- Reach for PNG when you need transparency or lossless quality. If the goal is simply a smaller file, WebP does that better.
- Camera metadata (timestamp, GPS position) is stripped during conversion — smaller files, and less to leak.
- Want it smaller still? Set Max width to 1.5–2× the size you actually display, and most web images lose more than half their weight.

Do I have to upload my images?
